‘The Appointment’ is a Short Comedy Film written, directed and starring Anna McNiven, and Produced by Anna McNiven and Walter Perez.
The film follows the main character Neil, on the day of an appointment he has that his wife booked for him, intended as the catalyst for him to improve his health. This day that Neil is dreading certainly turns out even more humiliating than he predicts!
Where did the inspiration for this Short Film come from?
I came up with the concept from when I was working at a health studio in Sydney Australia. There was a colonic center below the business and we’d get a few customers from time to time that would wonder up confusing our space for the colonic center, which was sometimes a little awkward, in a funny way!
The inspiration for the short film came from Anna. This is a script she
wrote back in her native Australia.
Is this your first Short Film?
Yes. This is the first short film that I have made on a professional level.
With Verloren Productions, Ms. Ashley Nettles and I have produced
eleven short films, a pilot and other artistic endeavors (Writing, Photography). However, this is the first short film I did with Anna. It was a great experience. I had the chance to read the original script, then I read the new one that became the short film. Anna and I worked together to cover all the fields; from casting to
choosing the crew we would be operating with. Anna is a joy to work with.
What was the biggest challenge you faced when making this film?
The biggest challenge was shooting the film in a 6-hour time frame. So it was a pretty fast paced process, but it made everyone come together and make it happen in time.
No such thing as smooth ride! Everything is always a challenge. In time,
Verloren Productions has become more and more acquainted with such details.
The Biggest, we’ve face for “The Appointment” was time. We had a good budget
and secured locations. Anna showed amazing skill behind the camera. My main
function was organization. Each of the actors was compensated with a Union
contract with Sag-Aftra. Verloren Productions has worked with Sag-Aftra on
various projects. And the actors have become part of the prestigious actor union.
What were some of the highlights?
Working with the cast and crew. Everyone was so great on set, the actors were patient and took direction really well, and the crew was incredibly focused and hard working from start to finish.
As a filmmaker myself, the most rewarding experience is to see
completed work. To see all the effort put by the crew and actors come to life
before an audience – and have the audience be taken by the work, is beyond any
joy I could think of (at the moment).
For you Anna, How did it feel to be starring in the film as well as directing and co-producing it?
It actually felt really good playing multiple roles. Because I wrote the film I had the vision in my mind of how I wanted it to be shot and directed, so being able to have full control over that was a great position to be in.
Anna wore multiple hats for this production. To see her do it with such
patience, reminded me of myself and previous work I have done as a producer,
director, writer and actor. Versatility is key.
Where is the film currently being shown?
It was recently screened at ‘Cinema At The Edge’ Film Festival in Santa Monica.
“The Appointment” formed part of The Cinema At the Edge Festival. The
short film was well received. We are planning to expand to various audience
members by placing the film in multiple festivals.
What would you like audiences to take away with them when they see this film?
A reminder that at the end of the day we are all just very simply human. We can all relate to what it’s like to be a vulnerable human being trying to improve in our own ways, which from a birds eye perspective, is humbling and kind of humorous.
"The Appointment” is a film that is accessible to everyone. Personally, I
would like the audience to relate to the colorful character that is 'Neil'. This man
could be any of us. A man facing a bit of a health crisis and trying to make a
difference in his life for the one he loves. It’s a very down to earth, funny tale.
Has this experience inspired you to make more films?
Yes most definitely! The whole process was so much fun! I am now working on turning this into a mini series, so looking at shooting the next part to Neil’s adventures to become a ‘better’ person soon.
Of course! Film is my passion and the one thing that brings me joy.
Verloren Productions was created for this purpose - our Production Company
started as a Facebook page to showcase my photography work. My sister Kim
began to look into names for the page, and together we decided to name it
“Verloren”, meaning Lost in the German language. We officially began to operate
with this name on March 10, 2009. From then on, we have expanded into other
media, particularly film. Working alongside aspiring filmmakers, writers,
musicians and other artists. Our main task is to help these individuals achieve
their objectives. To deliver a completed piece. We have two features in development.

Are you planning on working with the same production company and crew for your next project?
Yes without a doubt.
We had great time working together on this production. Anna and I are
Currently talking about the next venture, while keeping the momentum of “The
If you could have anybody star in your next feature, who would it be and why?
For some of the characters I have written in for the next roles, I could see someone like Seth Rogan, Jackie Chan and Chris Rock, that match the vibe of a few characters that briefly appear in the new episodes.
Good question. Working as a filmmaker and as an actor, you surround
yourself with many talented individuals, who are seeking roles and work that will propel them to the next level. This level varies in personal and objective. I would like to work with the best; with individuals who show promise and who
demonstrate this in their work. Exposure is necessary, and each of us needs it to get
to our desired goal.
