Yesterday the in-flight internet service Gogo posted an infographic that shows the use of mobile devices connected to their service. Gogo is used by the majority of North American airlines.
Android has seen some growth since 2011 from 3.2% to 16%, but Apple still dominates at 84% of usage. The devices shown on infographic were Tablets, Laptops, and Smartphones. Tablets won out against the other devices, coming in at 35%. Laptops came in close second at 33%, while smartphones came in at 32%. Not shown on the infographic, Gogo reported that Blackberrys and Windows phones both came in less that 1 percent each in usage on their service.
Most of the bandwidth being used was contributed to browsing the internet while work email, personal email, social networking, and news and weather won out the remaining Top 5 In-air activities.
Currently Gogo is available in over 1800 aircrafts across 10 major airlines so the numbers are pretty sound representation of in-flight usage of mobile devices. While Apple is still dominating in usage, Google is starting to introduce new products this year which may bring some competition as to the dominance to the in-flight Wi-Fi service.
