The anchor F-bomb and the FCC

YouTube Video

Fox's WNYW New York will make an on-air apology for the F-bomb dropped by news anchor, Ernie Anastos that is now all over YouTube.

Anastos made said the expletive during an exchange with the station's weather person.

The footage posted on YouTube went viral on the net. Vice President and General Manager Lew Leone said, "We are disappointed with Ernie's comment on the air last night. He will apologize for his use of inappropriate language tonight during FOX 5 News at 10 p.m."

Ironically, parent company, Fox was in the process of filing a court brief opposing the FCC's indecency determination that resulted in fines against the network for profanity uttered during an awards show.

The FCC guidelines on indecency released by Michael Powell give some latitude in this area to broadcasts that feature guests who utter spontaneous statements live and even slip-ups of news anchors.

Because the indecency laws are designed to protect children, Anastos' comment is not likely to result in any FCC action because it was broadcast 10 p.m.when children are not likely to be in the audience.

Indecency laws should protect everyone, and although it was a slip-up, the particular nature of the profanity in the comment makes me wonder what substance the anchor was on? Geez. Repeating it as a component of your article, rather than just reporting about it, makes it an examiner profanity, too.
