On May 23, the "American Idol" 2012 top 12 sang the phone book. Literally.

Yes, a dozen of the AI season's best warblers proved that anything can be performed as long as the material is done well. And then these brave souls proved that statement by singing some lyrics that are published in a big, fat book used to look up telephone numbers.

Talk about a seminal "American Idol" moment.

The AI top 12 acted as a choir when the lot took on the phone book, an item that isn't always found in households these days thanks to computers and search engines. But the property folks at this Fox reality show found the missive and gave it to their talent so the boys and girls who are about to go on the road could make the best of it.

And so, after that unprecedented move by the "American Idol" choir, the phone book will never, ever read the same again.

More on the AI season finale soon, so stay tuned.
