This Christmas seniors should walk not run to see the new Bruce Dern film Nebraska. Dern has been a favorite of the present writer since the Jefferson Square theater showed his classic performance in the 1974 film The Great Gatsby. In that film he played an Ivy League snob and 40 years later he plays an old man who is the victim of a fraud.

Seniors will identify with his character because there is no shame in being taken by a scam artist. A lie can be told to any person at any time. There are some cleaver people running these scams. From Zombie debt collectors to phoney lottery winnings these scam artists are intent to make their living breaking consumer laws and cheating elderly people.

Nebraska is the perfect Christmas movie for an adult child to take a parent. There is a hint in there somewhere. No matter how many times people are told if it’s too good to be true it probably isn’t true. They still fall for those clever pitch lines and official looking letters.

Dan Rather, the world remembers Dan, in his classic report, “Just Hang Up,” tells the story of an elderly man who lost his retirement savings to fraud because the scam artist kept telling him he only needed to send in one more payment to claim the prize. It was a lie. It was pure fraud. Dan Rather asked the senior, “Why didn’t you just hang up.”

People who are the victims of fraud keep hoping that they will regain their losses with one more payment. However, as the film Nebraska shows, there is a way to beat a scam artist. Drive to the office. Being retired means living on the income you have saved. Since that nest egg is gone, that is it. It would seem that seniors would guard their retirement funds with their lives, but as Bernie Madoff showed, frauds win big with the promise of a big pay off that never comes.

This Christmas the best gift a senior can get is to taken to a film that might just help them save their retirement funds. The film is a lesson in not believing the pitch that is too good to be true.

Nebraska is being show at all major theaters. The AMC Hoffman Center is an excellent place to see a film. The AMC Hoffman Center has been the location for all Christmas showings for the writer for the past decade. This Christmas make Nebraska a stop on the holiday viewing map.

AMC Hoffman Center is located on 2500 Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia. The telephone number is 703-998-4262.
