An interview with the amazingly talented and handsome actor- Shai Alexander!
Please introduce yourself to the readers
I am Shai Alexander, a European born Australian actor currently residing in LA
How and when did you first get into performing?
I started performing at a very young age and had the great experience of having my first production take place in the Opera Theatre in my birth city of Donetsk in the Ukraine. I was a young kid and my part was to dance together with a group of adult professional dancers in a rock opera performance.
Who were some of your biggest inspirations, growing up?
So many, literally, but to mention a few, would have to be Nikita Mikhalkov, Oleg Yankovski, Vincent Cassel, Daniel Day-Lewis and of course from the US- Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson. The list could go on for a while though.
What kind of training have you done?
I was trained in Screen Acting at the famous National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, Australia and this year I graduated from the intensive summer Screen Academy of Nikita Mikhalkov in Moscow, Russia. At the Academy the competition was 18 applicants per spot and we were working with the very best of the Russian Film Industry while the training was conducted by experts from some of the most prestigious theatrical schools in the world, including the legendary Moscow Art Theatre. It was an amazing experience!
What has been your favorite role to play so far and why?
I really enjoyed playing the lead in my latest film 'The Dark Story' which is inspired by Anton Chekhov's 'The Cherry Orchard'. The film was produced by Nikita Mikhalkov's Academy with support from Mosfilm (the biggest and oldest studio in Russia) and directed by the supremely talented Vera Vodinski. I enjoyed the story and my character's part in it. The film is about the clash of viewpoints of the modern and classic theatres and I played the hero who was very much walking the tight rope, so to speak, to balance the forces at work while himself, seeking his own way. I enjoyed that search.
What projects do you have coming up?
There are a few things on the go in Russia, but nothing I can speak of at the moment.
Who would be your ideal co-star and why?
I would love to play the villain opposite Daniel Craig in one of the Bond installments. Over here, I seem to be very much in demand when it comes to the 'dark' roles and such a role would be fantastic.
What are your plans for the future?
I am looking to settle in LA and make it my 'base' while working extensively in the US, Russia and Australia.
