It looks like the new franchise is well underway, officially, now that the 2nd installment of the Spiderman movie has put the finishing touches on production. The revamped cast, with actor Andrew Garfield returning as Spidey (he took over for Tobey Maguire after the latter intimated he was done being the web-slinging hero), also features Jamie Foxx as the electrifying supervillain Electro.
The introduction of Electro shows that the Columbia Pictures is committed to bringing Spiderman’s greatest and most persistent foes into the movie fold.
The trailer looks pretty good, although a small gripe is the clay-like plasticity of the friendly neighborhood web-slinger in many of the action scenes. Hasn’t CGI gotten better than this?
Yes, it has, and what appears to be a final fight scene between Electro and Spiderman is riveting, even in the tantalizingly short trailer clip.
Nonetheless, there appears to be a story behind the visual so-so. Peter Parker is very much the noble, troubled youth who just wants to save people in danger but, as Spiderman, realizes the task may get harder and harder because of who he is.
“Every day I wake up knowing, that the more people I try to save, the more enemies I will make. It’s just a matter of time before I face those with more power than I can overcome.” Given that he’s already taken down the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus in previous films, Electro probably shouldn’t be the one to give him pause.
The cast is also comprised of Emma Stone as Mary Jane, Sally field as Aunt Emma and Dane Mahann as Harry Osbourne. A surprise villain (well, not anymore) seems to be the mighty Rhino, who is played by Paul Giamatti. The Amazing Spiderman 2 opens in May 2014.
