The newest episode of “The Amazing Race” (originally airing Sunday, October 20, 2013) starts in Portugal with Nicole and Travis, having won the last leg, departing first. The first clue sends them via plane and ferry over 2,000 miles to Norway. All of the teams end up on the same flight to Bodo, Norway where they then take a ferry to their next destination.
All of the teams arrive at the clue at the same time and learn that the first detour offers the teams a choice between stringing together fish heads then transporting them to a drying station or picking dried cod from racks then pounding them with a hammer until they make one kilo of fish jerky with no bones in it. The teams then divide up as they try to find their ways to their respective challenges. All of the teams are a little thrown because it is 11pm, but since they are in the Arctic Circle the sun is shining bright. Since it is so late there are few people out to get directions from and few cabs on the road.
Tim and Marie are the first to arrive at the challenge that has them stringing fish heads. Brandon and Adam arrive at the fish stringing challenge next and Marie is worried they will be good at it because they “eat gross stuff all the time.”
Some teams find cabs and other have to walk and run a pretty long distance to the challenges. Most of the teams choose to do the challenge where they string the fish heads, but Tim and Danny choose to pound out the dried fish and are the first to arrive at that challenge. Nicky and Kim arrive at this challenge just as Tim and Danny are finishing up gathering their fish.
Back at the fish stringing challenge, the teams are finding out that this challenge isn’t so easy because it is a long way uphill to transport the fish via wheelbarrow. Leo and Jamal have an even worse time when their wheelbarrow gets a flat tire. Tim and Marie are the first to arrive at the hanging location, but they start hanging their fish heads on the wrong pole. Jason and Amy hang theirs on the correct pole (some poles are marked with the race flag) and are the first to leave the area followed by Brandon and Adam. Marie is getting angry when nobody will tell them what they are doing wrong and she isn’t shy about reminding them she has the extra express pass to give out. Amy tells us that Marie has promised every team they are going to get the express pass so her offers hold little value. Adam and Brandon go so far as to tell her that they don’t care and don’t want the express pass as they jog away, done with the challenge.
When Travis and Nicole show up and finish fast (after getting some info from Jason and Amy) Marie sees the marked pole and they are able to finish up leaving only Leo and Jamal along with Ally and Ashley still left to hang their fish heads.
At the fish pounding channel both teams are finding it to be pretty difficult. Nicky and Kim are just finishing collecting their fish when the last of the teams finish hanging their fish heads.
After a fun boat ride, the teams arrive at a road block where one member of the team must swing from an 80 foot rope tied to a bridge then jump into the frigid water and swim to a buoy where the next clue is. Brandon is the first to finish the swing and swim to the buoy. The clue has them travel to a rock quarry where they must hook a bolder to a truck with a chain and pull it far enough to uncover the next clue.
As teams make it through the swing the two teams back at the fish pounding challenge are still there working away. Tim and Danny finish up just as Nicky and Kim arrive and start hammering the fish. Further up the course, Brandon and Adam arrive at the quarry and start hooking their boulder up. They quickly get the boulder moved, find the clue and learn that they must drive the truck to the pit stop, a Viking longhouse. As they leave the other teams start to arrive.
At the quarry, some teams like Tim and Marie struggle a little while Jason and Amy get through it pretty quickly. When Tim and Marie get their boulder moved they only grab half of the clue, accidentally leaving behind the part that tells them where to go. They have no idea where they need to go, but they leave anyway hoping to just follow other teams. As it turns out the trucks are all stick shifts and neither Ally nor Ashley can drive a stick so they are stuck, but Tim and Danny take a moment to help them out and show them how.
Further back on the course, Kim and Nicky are just arriving at the swing as more teams are finishing up at the quarry and Brandon and Adam are looking for the pit stop. They find their destination, race inside and Brandon and Adam finish first. For winning this leg they each get $5,000. Phil then tells them that this not the stop, the race continues on so he hands them a clue and they run back out of the Viking longhouse.
Out on the course, Tim and Marie are driving around lost. Without the clue telling them where to go they have no idea where the pit stop is. They happen upon Travis and Nicole who know where the pit stop is. Nicole offers them a deal. If Tim and Marie give them the extra express pass they will tell them where the pit stop is.
This fun episode of “The Amazing Race” comes to an end with Marie saying no to the deal as Travis and Nicole threaten to then drive off and leave them stranded.
