“Hey, I thought this movie was really just called Thor.”
If you have ever caught yourself thinking this, you were most likely right. The Asylum has made a name for itself by taking real anticipated Hollywood blockbusters and creating their own version with a slightly altered title. Their latest installment was taken from Marvel’s “Thor” with the title “The Almighty Thor.”
They have taken almost every major release out there, and created their own version, usually with the same actors. To name a few, “Transmorphers” (Transformers), “I Am Omega” (I Am Legend), and “Paranormal Entity” (Paranormal Activity) are only a few of the countless rip-offs in their massive collection. They make sure to release it around the same time as the true film. By doing this, they manage to confuse those who aren’t familiar with “The Asylum”, making them buy the wrong film, and profiting off their mistake.
The Asylum would not even be that terrible if it weren’t for their low budget, bad acting, bad lighting, extremely terrible special effects and lack of creativity. Though because of all this, they come off as amateur and disappointing to anyone expecting a decent film. Their process of writing movies is simple – they decide on the next movie they are going to rip off, and then write the script in usually one day.
Surprisingly enough, The Asylum has never lost money on a film. This is because they either succeeded in tricking others into buying the movie, or people buy the movies simply to make fun of the Asylum’s attempts. It is extremely doubtful that they actually have fans out there that prefer Asylum’s B-rated movies to the real deal.
When it comes right down to it, the Asylum has no respect for the hardworking filmmakers trying to perfect a piece of art. They have no respect for themselves as filmmakers if they cannot come up with something on their own, and in turn, many film enthusiasts have no respect for them either.
If you are looking for a good movie to watch, stay away from The Asylum, and look for the films that Asylum based theirs off of. Or if you would like, Netflix Instant Streaming has nearly every Asylum title available to watch online, but don’t say you weren’t warned.
