The Alarmists - A look at those sounding the alarm about manmade climate change

The Climate Change Alarmists - Al Gore, James Lovelock, James Hansen, Carol Browner
Some of the climate change alarmists - Al Gore, James Lovelock,
James Hansen, and Carol Browner.

The climate change debate is varied as are the people who are warning about its effects but there are some men and women who are more visible in the debate than others. While some are scientists, many of the ones we read about and see in the news are other types of personalities – politicians, government employees, and others. All are fervent in their belief that man is the driving factor in the earth’s climate and they advocate swift and immediate action.

Here is a quick look at some of the alarmists:

Al Gore, Former Vice President of the United States
This former Vice President of the United States is the most visible and most well known of all climate change alarmists however he is also the most divisive. His movie An Inconvenient Truth brought global warming to the forefront of many people’s minds and despite a number of errors in it, it is still cited by alarmists. While the alarmists hail him, he is reviled by deniers. He dismisses any argument that other factors in climate change could be bigger than man and says those that believe otherwise “still believe that the moon landing was staged on a movie lot in Arizona.”

Dr. James Hansen, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies
Hansen has been warning about manmade climate change for more than two decades. He holds a doctorate in physics and as head of the NASA division responsible for analyzing “Global Change” he stands on a large bully pulpit from which to speak. He has become a bit of a celebrity within the climate change movement and has issued very dire warnings about the topic. He has said that, “Coal-fired power stations are death factories” and while advocating for the strongest of measures, he does not believe the proposed cap and trade system will work saying, “A cap and trade with offsets and escape hatches will be guaranteed to fail.”

Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Chairman, IPCC
Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Chairman, IPCC

Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
As head of the United Nations’ official climate change panel, Rajendra Pachauri has guided the world body’s opinion on global warming and climate change. He holds two PhD’s, one in industrial engineering and the other in economics, but it is his current position and his work on the IPCC’s papers that has drawn him the most attention. He is an advocate for developing nations and the need to combat climate change to prevent them from suffering the worst damage. He has likened doubters to Flat Earthers and said, “The science about climate change is very clear. There really is no room for doubt at this point.”

Carol Browner, Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy
Also known as the “Climate Czar,” “Energy Czar,” or “Global Warming Czar,” Browner serves as President Obama’s advisor on climate issues. She holds a Juris Doctorate and previously served as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency during the Clinton administration. Her current position was created by President Obama to coordinate the White House’s policies with respect to energy and climate change however sweeping climate policy changes have currently taken a back seat to health care and economic concerns. Browner has come under fire for ties to a socialist group that advocates “global governance” and like other administration czars, is viewed by some as being part of a power grab by the administration to take powers of oversight away from Congress.

Dr. James Lovelock
British scientist James Lovelock is best known for his work on chlorofluorocarbons that resulted in a global ban on CFCs due to their damaging effect to the ozone layer. Prior to that he performed work for NASA developing instruments to detect life on Mars. He has become Britain’s version of Dr. James Hansen with his alarmism regarding manmade climate change. Lovelock believes it is too late to save the earth from its fate due to climate change and has predicted that 90% of the population will be culled by the year 2100. Last year he said, “Enjoy life while you can. Because if you're lucky it's going to be 20 years before it hits the fan." Unlike many alarmists, Lovelock is a proponent of nuclear energy as a way to quickly and completely ease carbon emissions.

It amazes me that Gore is still seen by anyone as having ounce of credibilty. So many of his claims have been debunked, yet he still ridicules anyone who questions his propaganda.

I believe Al Gore has a serious mental issue.

Until he decides to debate anyone on the issue he has so consumed himself with, his ramblings will get the credibility they deserve.

    NONE!

Al Gore is telling the truth as the other credible scientists back him up. The facts are there and the truth is ugly. Some of you fat people might have to actually do something for your children and get off your couches. Those that have their knuckles on the ground just does not want to hear it so they use "protected stupidity" to try to deny the science. You all are the "Queens of Denial". Wallow in it, get fatter on your couches, but let the rest of us that has morals and character fight for our children with out your ignorant comments.

It never ceases to amaze me that so many pick at Al Gore. In case anyone missed the memo, he's a politician and not a scientist. Poking a stick at Al Gore looks to me a lot like schoolyard bully behavior. Pick on the weaker kid because you'll get your backside waxed by a stronger kid.

Unless and until skeptical scientists are willing to debate believing scientists, all the Al Gore attacks in the world won't make up for a lack of substance in the Climate Change denial agenda.

Ken said, "Unless and until skeptical scientists are willing to debate believing scientists..."

From what I have seen, the problem is just the opposite. The skeptics and deniers do want to debate but because alarmists so firmly believe the science is settled, they rebuff any argument.

There have been several publicized offers of bets between both believers and deniers. These strike me as somewhat gimmicky, and I think I have a better idea.

I propose a series of Oxford Style Debates between scientists on different sides of the issue. Let's see who's really willing to step up and debate the issue in accordance with the rules for an Oxford Style Debate.

It's amazing how James Hansen is still considered credible. His papers are mainly "Thought experiments" based on incomplete or false data and assumptions that later are found to be totally in error. For example his 2005 Hanson, Ruedy, Sato paper that showed "the earth is warmer now than it has been in 400,000 years" was blown out of the water by the Multinational CAPE project and not a word was said about Hansen being wrong. His assumptions about climate sensitivity from his 1984 paper are based on incomplete information about the relationship between CO2 and temperature in the Vostoc ice cores and have been soundly refuted by current research based on real world studies on clouds and water vapor. Again not a word about Hansen being wrong.

The theory of man made climate change is just that, Mann made. (not a typo) The most persuasive and alarming evidence that the warming we saw till 1998 was unprecedented and unatural was made in the 1998 tree ring study of global tepratures published by Michael Mann, the So called "Hockey stick" graph and it's derivatives. Now that the raw data has finally been wrenched from the small circle of researchers that published these scare graphs, it seems that the unprecedented and unatural shape was caused by the selective use of 12 trees. The IPCC chapters were chaired/written by these same characters. It's a scam.
