Many people in the Atlanta area will be mourning the death of this icon who was the eye in the sky every morning reporting the traffic situation on WSB TV every morning. He was affectingly known as Captain Herb Emory.
He loved his job and said his helicopter was the best office in the world. If you are from this area, you can just close your eyes and hear his distinctive voice.
He went to the aid of an automobile crash to see if he could help and fell ill. He was taken to WellStar Douglas Hospital where he died of a massive heart attack at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon.
He died as he lived helping others. He got the broadcasting bug when he was in the sixth grade and began doing menial jobs for a radio station to get his foot into the door of broadcasting.
AJC’s reporter Rodney Thrash gives the full report.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends; but also thousands upon thousands of viewers and listeners who depended on him to guide them through Atlanta traffic.
