DJ’s are nice but for serious grooving it helps to have a nine (9!) member strong horn band in charge of your hips. An Afronaut’s show will leave you sore well into Saturday afternoon. Dressed to impress, The Afronaut’s play tight afrobeat jams just as professionally as Bob Marley’s well-rehearsed Wailers did in days past. The group play multi-meter Afro-Funk grooves and solos with deserved confidence. In short, your grandmother didn’t answer her phone last night because she was shakin’ it for The Afronauts.
The Afronauts perform songs with Afro-Funk heads and extended jams that showcase individual talents. Everyone in the crowd dances like the Mayans had a reason to stop counting just before 2013. The nine musicians in the band perform trumpet, trombone, saxophones, guitar, bass, percussion, and drums. Eric Keeney, Stephen Angus, Peter Lyons, Travis Daudert, Mike Mosteller, Andrew McNew, Luke Palmer, Alice Hansen and rotating percussionists Scott Mast and Tober Schorr are those funky individuals.
This is a huge ensemble that represents a significant commitment from each of the musicians in practice and rehearsal. Even further behind the scenes, someone is writing the songs and transcribing the Fela Kuti covers. Local bands like this deserve the followings they develop because they will make you dance all night. Unless your get moodily dragged away from Boulder in a Subaru (true story).
If you don’t hear The Afronaut’s soon you are only shorting yourself. Their show schedule is available online. Check them out soon!
