The Advocate released its annual list of gayest cities on Thursday, Jan. 10. The list, created in collaboration with the Human Rights Campaign, BiNetUsa, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
Criteria included a number of factors including equal marriage rights (gay marriage) in the city, the number of openly GLBTQ political figures either currently in office or elected to office in the 2012 elections, and more.
Here is the complete list of the gayest cities in the United States as per The Advocate:
- Tacoma, Washington
- Springfield, Massachusetts
- Spokane, Washington
- Washington D.C.
- Seattle, Washington
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- Eugene, Oregon
- Madison, Wisconsin
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Twin Cities (Minneapolis, St. Paul), Minnesota
- Oakland, California
- Providence, Rhode Island
- Colorado Springs, Colordo
- Salem, Oregon
- St. Louis, Missouri
Criteria used to determine a cities status on the list included:
- Number of federal, state, and local officials either in office or elected during the 2012 elections
- Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index
- Concerts by the groups Scissor Sisters, Uh Huh Her, Girl in a Coma, and cast of Glee since 2009
- Number of Whole Foods, West Elm, or Pottery Barn Stores
- Extent to which the city has protection for its transgender people as per the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
- Number of gay rugby teams in the city
- Number of bisexual resources groups as per the BiNetUSA
- Number of roller derby leagues
- State of equal marriage rights in the city
- All divided by the population within city limits (with a population of at least 150,000 people required in the city at the time of the research)
