The ACC got off to a rousing start in the Big 10/ACC challenge on Tuesday night. They won four of the first six games, to take a (4-2) lead going into Wednesday’s action. The good news for the ACC is that they had chances to win all six of the games with four minutes left, but they let a couple games get away.
The Big 10 wasn’t devoid of high moments as well. They had a legitimate shot at winning three of the games on Tuesday night, and the Big 10 had a last second attempt to send a game into overtime.
As predicted, every home team one last night. It will be interesting to see if any teams can earn a breakout win on the road. Three of the games finished with double figure spreads. The largest margin was 17 points and the closest game was three points.
Indiana vs. Syracuse
Syracuse wins 69-52
The athletic ability of both teams were on display Tuesday night. Syracuse got off to an early 10-0 lead but still had to weather a late first half surge by Indiana. The Hoosiers even took a one point lead before Syracuse went on another massive run that spanned two halves. Syracuse had three players in double figures, but it was the defense that led the Orange to victory. Syracuse had Seven blocks and 10 steals.
Michigan vs. Duke
Duke wins 79-69
The Blue Devils led wire to wire and held a 10 point halftime lead to win by 10. Quinn Cook carried the Blue Devils with 24 points and nine assists. Duke also held Nik Stauskas to tow field goal attempts.
Illinois vs. Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech wins 67-64
Georgia Tech moved to (6-3) and this could be the type of win to catapult the Yellow Jackets into consideration for an At-Large tournament berth.
Penn State vs. Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh wins 78-69
Pittsburgh turned a two point halftime deficit into a nine point victory. The Panthers are undefeated in their first season in the ACC.
Notre Dame vs. Iowa
Iowa wins 98-93
Iowa knocked off Notre Dame in one hotly contested battle. Aaron White was three rebounds and three assists away from a triple double.
Florida State vs. Minnesota
Minnesota wins 71-61
The Golden Gophers got a huge victory over Florida State. Minnesota won the final few possessions to put the game away, but it was a non shot clock violation that resulted in a defensive stop and turnover for Florida State.
Not surprisingly, every home team is favored for Wednesday’s games as well. If the scores hold to form, the Big 10/ ACC Challenge will end in a tie. The most intriguing game for Wednesday night is the Wisconsin and Virginia matchup. Both teams have relied heavily on defense, but they also have some great front court scorers. Let’s see if the Virginia crowd can facilitate a home victory.
