The deadline for enrolling in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is looming and it appears that the seven million enrollment goal will be met. According to Charles Gaba at acasignups.net, as of today 6.72 million are enrolled. That goal seemed insurmountable last year. Job well done. Lots of people will have insurance. It is not Obamacare. It is the Affordable Care Act. It is not government run insurance. It is private insurance provided by private insurance companies sold to individuals. There are no death panels. The only healthcare rationing that exists is the same healthcare rationing that has always been done by the insurance companies.
How do the numbers look in Georgia? According to the Georgia Department of Insurance and Fire Safety, there are 177,668 enrolled as of March 15. Of those enrolled, 81% have paid premiums. The exact number is 144,665. This is despite of State Insurance Commissioner's acknowledged attempts to do everything he could to obstruct the enactment of the law. He is quite proud of it. He and the Republican controlled state government wouldn't allow the creation of a state run exchange. They also have made all the navigators pass the same test that insurance agents have to pass. Hudgens is a cancer survivor and as such he has a preexisting condition. Before the ACA no insurance company would have to provide him with coverage. He would be too great of a risk. What remains to be seen is if enough young and healthy people enrolled insurance to even out the risk associated with those who are unhealthy or have preexisting conditions. Will people pay their premiums? How will those who remain uninsured be reached? Only time will tell. What is certain is that after voting for the 50th time to repeal the ACA this month, the Republicans will not stop trying to destroy it. They have no real tangible plans and solutions to the health and insurance problems we face. They seem to have forgotten that the ACA was in fact based on the Dole alternative to Hillary Clinton's health care plan. They seem to have forgotten that the plan was created by the Heritage Foundation. All they know is that President Obama pushed the passage of the ACA and because of that they cannot possibly tolerate it. They feel it must be destroyed.
