Learn about artists and works represented in the Mint's Modern & Contemporary Art Collection this Wednesday, May 14 from 6PM to 9PM at the Mint Museum Uptown. The term Modern Art generally describes works produced from the 1860s to the 1970s, and embodies the style and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term is typically associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been set aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists experimented with ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. This style moved away from narrative (which was characteristic of the traditional arts) toward abstraction. More recent artistic production is often referred to as Contemporary art or Postmodern art. Some of the early modern art movements included Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, and Futurism.
In this exhibition, decoding Modern Art begins with a lecture by Assistant Curator Amber Smith, Followed by a special performance and conversation about American modern dance choreographer Martha Graham by Kim Jones and Jeanmarie Higgins. Choreographer and Regisseur Kim Jones and Dramaturge Jeanmarie Higgins will discuss and perform the lost solo of Martha Graham entitled “Imperial Gesture”. As no motion picture film of this original performance exists, Kim Jones reconstructed the choreography by studying period photographs by American photographer Barbara Morgan. Another activity at the exhibit will include learning more about modernist literature and influential writers of the twentieth century with representatives from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Throughout the exhibit you may participate in a meditation session on colors with Charlotte, NC artist and Reiki instructor Montse Ferragut. The exhibit also features a printmaking station where you can create an abstract work of art.
