Sunday, September 8th, beginning at 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time, the 8th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, presented by Helen Woodward Animal Center and sponsored by Blue Buffalo, will be taking place. It is their hope that you will be able to join them before summer comes to an end. PAW-abunga!
The Helen Woodward Animal Center, otherwise referred to as HWAC, is about to show “ohana” spirit to orphaned pets in and around the California area. Besides that, the new surf dog hall of famer and other furry west-coast beach bums are about to join paws in order to ensure a successful fundraiser to benefit the canines less fortunate.
This popular event will be held at Dog Beach in Del Mar. In addition to this year’s “hang twenty” competition, local surFur pups from gromMutts (beginners) to paw-fessionals will unite with their sand-covered, sun-bathing, Frisbee-fetching, beach bum counterparts in order to celebrate the induction of a brand new Surf Dog Hall of Famer.
HWAC’s canine surf contest is the largest of its kind in the country. This year’s event will feature more than 80 dogs surfing in four different weight class competitions. The winners will be chosen based upon their ability to ride the waves, have fun and stay on their boards.
This summer, many of the competitors that had their eyes on the prize attended Surf Dog classes with tail-wagging enthusiasm in hopes of grabbing the coveted title and wagging rights at dog beaches and parks. The “Top Surf Dog 2013” will also receive a Top Fundraiser Grand Prize four-night, five-day fishing trip to Mexico. Each surFur heat will be judged by local celebrities, surf pros and aficionados.
If your dog is not competing but you and your family would like to attend, there will be plenty of other dog-and-family friendly activities scheduled. The activities include the Beach Bum Canine Costume Contest, a costumed Team Spirit Surf Competition (where people form surf teams with friends and dogs in order to raise funds for orphaned pets), plus over 40 interactive vendor booths (including some of the top brands of pet products and surf gear), and finally, two NEWLY ADDED extra-curricular activities, including a Flying Fido Frisbee Festival and a Special Kid’s Activity area. The children’s activities involve Sandcastle Building, Musical Towels, Hula Hoop Contests and much more. All proceeds from the annual competition and festivities go towards the animals and programs at the Helen Woodward Animal Center.
The event is something many people look forward to attending. This 8th year promises even more since supporters are already breaking records this summer thanks to the sponsors and individual canine athletes and their families calling for “all paws on deck” in an incredible push for participation and fundraising. So far, $68,000 has been raised and there is practically one week to go to raise even more funds. Many pooches who are “paw-ing it forward” by raising funds will sport blue “Rescue Hero” bandanas at the event to show their ongoing ohana commitment to their fuzzy friends still awaiting forever families back at the Center.
