The nominees for the 84th Annual Academy Awards were announced earlier this morning. The ceremony will air Sunday, February 26th at 7pm eastern and 4pm pacific. While it is true that I pretty much hate awards shows and I don't pay attention to the Oscar race, I'm generally interested in what's being nominated and who wins what. I'm a little surprised Shame wasn't nominated for anything and it's more than a little disappointing that Drive wasn't nominated for cinematography or best director (or anything remotely worthwhile). Tintin not being included in the animated feature film category is extremely surprising, as well. But before I get too involved in who wasn't nominated or who I want to win, let's take a look at some of the nominees.

I'm pulling for The Artist to win best picture, but I think The Descendants will pull an upset; kind of like how they did at the HFCS awards. Jean Dujardin is who I'd love to win best actor as well, but I think George Clooney will get the nod. Part of me is surprised Gary Oldman made the cut. I love Oldman's work, but I don't think Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is anything special. Many people, especially the online community, certainly did. Really disappointed Michael Fassbender wasn't nominated for Shame here. Best actress is a bit tough for me. Rooney Mara is who I'd like to win, but I think Viola Davis deserves it more. I'm surprised Tilda Swinton didn't get a nod for We Need to Talk About Kevin though. Max von Sydow was the best part of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. In fact, he was the only part of the movie I really enjoyed. With that said, I feel like both Christopher Plummer and Nick Nolte put in great performances as well. My pick? Christopher Plummer. I'm immediately drawn to Berenice Bejo for supporting actress, but also loved Jessica Chastain in The Help. I could see McCarthy getting the upset though, so I'm thinking she'll win. I'm very partial to Kung Fu Panda 2 and think The Tree of Life will win for best cinematography even though I love the way every film looks in that category. A few last minute picks with the rest of the nominees: Alexander Payne for best director, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for film editing, The Iron Lady for make-up, John Williams Tintin score for original score (although Ludovic Bource's one for The Artist is phenomenal as well), Rise of the Planet of the Apes for visual effects, Moneyball for adapted screenplay, and The Artist for original screenplay.
I know nothing about predicting the Oscars, so we'll see how this goes.
