The 70th Annual Arkansas Writers' Conference coming in June

The 70th annual Arkansas Writers’ Conference will be held Friday June 6 and Saturday June 7, 2014 at the Pulaski Technical College, South Campus Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management Institute.

In addition to the usual festivities such as speeches and the awards ceremony for contests winners, this year’s conference also features some interesting new opportunities like Author 5-Minute Pitches to Publishers, which authors may sign up for at the AWC welcome table. There is also a particularly appealing door prize offered this year: two free days with a five day stay at the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow.

This year’s keynote speaker is Carla McClafferty, an author and prominent public speaker who has presented programming locally, nationally and internationally. She has also been featured on C-SPAN 2 Book TV. Her books include The Many Faces of George Washington: Remaking A Presidential Icon, and her latest book Fourth Down and Inches: Concussions and Football’s Make-or-Break Moment. McClafferty will present a program on Friday at 11 a.m. titled Seamless: Using Research in Your Text. She will also speak at the awards ceremony Saturday at 6 p.m., giving a speech titled The Story Behind the Story.

Highlights of the conference include such programs as Unleashing Your Dreams with Ashley Fontainne, Friday at 5:15 p.m.; Establishing Voice with Multiple Main Characters with Tamara Hart Heiner, Friday at 6 p.m; Interviewing Your Characters with Jan Morrill, Saturday at 2 p.m.; and the panel discussion The Challenges and Opportunities for Playwriting with moderator Robin McClea and a panel consisting of AR Arts Council Fellowship winners: Maat RaButterfly, Clinnesha Sibley, & Werner Trieschmann on Saturday at 3 p.m.

There will also be read-arounds, workshops and opportunities for writers to sell their books.

Admission to the conference is $30 per person. In exchange for a $15 fee, authors may enter as many of the writing contests as they wish. Submissions to contests accompanied by the registration form must be postmarked on or before April 18, 2014.
