The 43rd Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus was held this past week from September 18th – 21st.
The ALC was an opportunity for African Americans to reconnect and examine the state of African American’s progress in the personal and professional arenas. Many from across the nation attended hoping to learn and contribute to improving the current status of poverty, unemployment and under-employment, inequality in the workplace, unacceptable living standards and the push for African Americans to gain equal standing in this country.
While the general consensus was a positive assessment that African Americans are prospering, obtaining more opportunities and finding new ways to get ahead, there is also a constant reminder that there is still much work to be done.
There were general sessions on hip-hop & politics, men mentoring men, diabetes and health, opportunities in Africa, home ownership and much more. There were celebrities in attendance, receptions, parties and a keynote address by President Obama.
Despite the wonderful opportunity for African Americans to gather and refocus on improving their lives, the real question becomes, “What’s next”? Will this be just another gathering of influential leaders and celebrities? What is the next step?
The next step begins with you. Each one of us has to take up the mantle and do the work so that next year we will have more to celebrate. We have to decide that we can succeed and we can help each other succeed. It takes each one of us to make a difference.
Let’s improve and reconvene next year with more stories of African American success!
