Rachael Ray is featuring the 400-Calorie Fix - the diet that suggests eating four meals of 400 calories each, spread out throughout the day. But to take it a step further, applying Ayurvedic (the sister science to yoga) guidelines of optimal times during the day to eat may make this diet’s success even more beneficial.
Ideally, it is best to eat the biggest meals when your digestive fire (agni) is at its highest. This puts a new spin on when to eat. With a busy work schedule, it is typical to eat a very small and hurried breakfast, a quick lunch, and gorge oneself one a huge dinner once at home. But according to Ayurvedic practices, the agni is burning the brightest at noon and so lunch should be the biggest meal of the day. By evening, the digestive process has begun to slow as the body prepares for sleep.
Applying the guidelines of both the 400-Calorie Fix and Ayurveda, the first meal would be best consumed first thing in the morning, the second during late morning, third in the early afternoon, and the final meal in the early evening.
Adding any form of physical activity will make any diet more successful. Participating in a yoga practice first thing in the morning supports the growing glow of the digestive fires and prepares the body for the incoming healthy foods.
