Despite the efforts of more than 30 companies in Colorado, one message came through loud and clear at the Henry's Monday night: eight is enough.

The annual Colorado Theatre Guild Henry Awards, named for longtime theater producer Henry Lowenstein, were held Monday, July 21, 2014 during a formal ceremony at the Arvada Center for the Arts. Established in 2006, the Henry Awards honor outstanding achievements during the past season and serves as the Colorado Theatre Guild's annual fundraising event. Nominations are determined through a judging process conducted by more than 45 statewide theatre reporters, reviewers and assigned judges. It’s been an effort of the Colorado Theatre Guild to expand its reach to more theater companies and shows in the cities outside the Denver Metro Area, as the guild has been working very hard year after year to expand its reach.

During the 2013-2014 awards season, 213 shows in the Colorado area were eligible to be seen by the Henry judging committee, of those 213 shows, 174 received the minimum number of judges (six judges must attend the show in order for it to be judged for the Henry Awards.) For this award year, 19 companies received a nomination while eight took home at least one award (not including the special award categories.) Curious Theatre was the big winner with eight awards for its production of “The Whipping Man” and The Denver Center Theatre Company came in a close second with five awards for its productions of “Animal Crackers” and “The Legend of Georgia McBride.”

The number of companies that received recognition for this most recent year is actually down from the previous award year. During the 2012-2013 season 206 shows were eligible and 167 received the minimum number of judges for consideration. During that year, 21 companies received nominations while 11 companies took home at least one award. It’s interesting to note that that the numbers of shows judged was up from the previous year, while the number of companies receiving recognition was down.

Here is the complete list of all the winners from Monday’s ceremony.
