The 2014 Bowlful of Blues is August 30 in Newton

The South Skunk Blues Society will host their 22nd Annual Bowlful of Blues on Saturday, August 30 starting at noon. The event will take place at the Maytag Bowl at Maytag Park in Newton. Advanced tickets are available for $15 at the following locations: Mattingly Music & Books in Newton, Hy-Vee in Newton, Cadillac Jack's in Baxter, The Music Shop in Grinnell, and Zzz Records in Des Moines. Ticket prices go up to $20 at the gate. Children under twelve get in free when accompanied by an adult. There will be a number of food vendors at the event, offering ice cream, pulled pork, Cajun food, and more.

The lineup for this year's Bowlful of Blues will feature performances by six area and regional blues acts. Here is a look at the schedule for the event:

Noon to 1:30 p.m.: The Harvest Band (Bloomfield, Iowa) with Johnny "Juke" Mattingly (Newton, Iowa)

2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Sumpin' Doo (Des Moines, Iowa)

4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Hot Tamale and The Red Hots (Des Moines, Iowa)

6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.: Kilborn Alley Blues Band (Champaign, Illinois)

8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.: Cash Box Kings with Barrelhouse Chuck (Chicago, Illinois)

Acoustic blues act Ben Green from Shenandoah, Iowa will be performing acoustic sets during the set up/tear down time between each of the acts above. Opening act The Harvest Band will be releasing a CD tribute to the 22nd Annual Bowlful of Blues and the South Skunk Blues Society entitled Live & Blue at the event. Following the event, there will be an After-Party Jam across the street at the Newton American Legion Post 111 that will feature The Harvest Band, Kilborn Alley Blues Band, and others.
