The 2014 Battle of the Burger presented by Amstel Light, winner and losers

This year’s Battle of the Burger was once again amazing. Over 10 restaurants participated in the burger war with one claiming victory while the others played for second place. This year’s winner was the ever so popular Jeepney’s with their “Choriburger” made from half beef and half longganisa sausage, and topped with banana ketchup, Maggi aioli, and served on a soft challah bun. My partner in crime Raven, went to each tasting table trying to figure out which burger stood out from the rest, at the end everyone used their token and voted for Jeepney.

It was such a great experience down by the south street seaport, the weather the great and Amstel light was serving their light beer along with my favorite the Radler. This is how it went down, you go to all the tables, sample all the burgers then at the end you use your one token to vote for your favorite burger. Raven and I had 2 finalists, Whitehall’s ‘Whitehall Burger’ which included pickled beats, caramelized onions, sunnyside-up egg and a brioche bun (sounds funny but believe me it was delicious) to name some of the ingredients and Dram Shop’s ‘Dram Burger” which had dill pickles, mustard, two ground beef patties and chopped onions. At the end the Dram burger won our vote, but sadly the Dram didn’t even crack the top 3. Other notables were Bill’s Bar & Burger, and Twist and Smash’d BBQ style burger (which made the top 3). Some popular burger spots that were missing was STK, Shake Shack, Burger Joint, J.G. Melon, Corner Bistro and Minetta Tavern who inexplicably were absent the day of and would made the night very interesting for the winner.

Winner’s Information:

1. Jeepney’s “Choriburger”: made from half beef and half longganisa sausage, and topped with banana ketchup, Maggi aioli, and served on a soft challah bun.


2. Pork Slope’s “Pork Slope Cheeseburger”: classic juicy cheeseburger with pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard.

3. Twist and Smash’d “Southern BBQ Smash’d Burger”: short rib burger with caramelized onions, roasted red peppers and BBQ sauce. Served with twisted potatoes on a stick on the side.

Lastly, 5 Napkin burger had a sandwich that Raven describe as “eating boogers” and I couldn’t agree more, hey 5 napkin, come better next year please, thanks.
