The 2012 Ohio State Fair, going on now through Sunday, August 5, is a fun time for the whole family. All your old favorites are back, and this year’s new additions have made the fair better than ever.
The agricultural displays are still the heart of the fair, and visitors can not only view the cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals being judged, but they can also stop at the educational displays showing various breeds of rabbits, new-born lambs and calves, and more. During set hours, visitors can even try their hand at milking a cow. Kids, and those who are kids at heart, will love the petting zoo set up inside of Kiddieland, where you can have a hands-on experience with animals from around the world.
Fair food is, of course, a big draw, and the Ohio State Fair does not disappoint. From deed-fried anything to down-home country cooking, you will find it all with the number of vendors participating. Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, a Columbus favorite, is on hand with their delicious offerings, but nothing says summer better than a fire-roasted ear of corn dipped in melted butter. For those with a taste for the deep fried, try the deep fried bacon and cheddar mashed potatoes, found near the Ag and Hort building. They are surprisingly delicious without being too heavy or greasy.
A must-see for lovers of the outdoors is the Natural Resources Park, just to the south of the OHIO gates. A new feature this year is a walking path back through time showing some of the rock formations that mark the distinct stages of natural development Ohio has gone through over the millennia. Other features of this section of the Ohio State Fair include animal displays featuring native Ohio species, two shooting ranges (one .17 caliber pellet guns and one virtual reality), a walk through the prairies, and more. Featured programs include a lumberjack show, retriever dogs, and animals from the Columbus Zoo.
Whether your idea of fun is rides, animals, food, or just having a good time outside on a beautiful summer day in Columbus, the 2012 Ohio State Fair certainly has something to offer. Visit the Ohio State Fair website for details on tickets and special events.
