What is the Values Voters Summit? It’s an event put on every fall by FRC Action, which is a division of the Family Research Council. It’s basically a large gathering of conservative family oriented groups and speakers and usually brings in a large number of GOP presidential contenders.
The summit was opened today with these words by the M.C., “Four years ago Americans were asking, 'Who is Barack Obama?’ Today they are asking, 'Just who does Barack Obama think he is?’” This is a pretty good summary for the feel of this weekend's conference. The speakers today include Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann and others. All of the top tier GOP candidates will speak at the Values Voters Summit.
Tomorrow the VVS will announce its straw poll results. If things continue to move for Herman Cain the way they have been, I expect him to be the winner. It’s not out of the question, however, that Michelle Bachman or another candidate could win instead. The winner of VVS straw poll could find himself pushed further ahead in the polls, thereby giving a major boost to any candidate.
Not too surprisingly, the Southern Poverty Law Center held a press conference across the street from the event and urged public figures to boycott the event due to FRC’s views against homosexuality. While SPLC is entitled to its views, don’t expect any of the speakers to change their schedules. The Values Voters Summit has a pretty solid and unabashed Biblical foundation and that‘s what the speakers and attendees expect.
Keep an eye on this event, including the speeches, straw poll and other news coming out and it will likely provide a preview of how the 2012 GOP primaries will pan out.
