The 2010 SHO Convention raises over $8,000 for charity

Last month, I brought you a look at the 2010 SHO Convention – the 19th annual meeting of Ford Taurus SHO enthusiasts from around the world sponsored by SHOClub.com and BringBackTheSHO.com (click here for the original article). This week-long event took the attendees around the metro Detroit area, with stops at the Ford World Headquarters, Ford Proving Grounds (where Ford Motor Company provided a photographer to snap pictures of the attendees’ cars on the proving grounds track), Waterford Hills Raceway, the Henry Ford Museum, Joe Louis Arena, and the Cleveland Engine Plant. Today, I spoke with Ken Mallinson and he filled me in on the final numbers from the 19th Annual SHO Convention.

Over 160 people attended this year’s SHO Convention with representatives from 25 states and 2 Canadian provinces. While some convention-goers opted to bring a vehicle other than their SHO (the convention is open to all SHO enthusiasts – not just SHO owners), there were exactly 100 Ford Taurus SHO models spanning the 5 generations of the high performance sedan but the most impressive news was the amount of money raised for charities.

While the convention committee comprised of members of the Mallinson family puts together a week of Ford-themed fun for all, they also use the various stops as fund raising points. The trip to the Ford Proving Grounds on Tuesday served as a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation bringing in $1,820 and during the Waterford Hills raceway parade lap on Wednesday, $393 more was contributed by those who participated. The big money event was on Thursday during the SHO Convention banquet where the group holds both a silent and live auction. The folks from Ford offered up a variety of items autographed by Ford management members such as Edsel Ford, Alan Mulally and Derrick Kuzak and when the evening was over, the group had raised $5,872. $500 of that went to a member of the SHO community to help with medical expenses and the rest was split evenly between the Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.

The organizers did a fantastic job of packing a week full of festivities for those who made the trek to the Motor City and I applaud them for their efforts. Also, those 160 people who came out for the 2010 SHO Convention helped to raise over $8,000 for charity, making the 19th Annual SHO Convention about more than having fun as they opened their wallets to help those who are less fortunate. Next year’s SHO Convention is being held in Raleigh, North Carolina so if you are a SHO owner or enthusiast, check out the SHOClub.com for more information on the 20th Annual SHO Convention.

Have a look at my video below of the group leaving the Ford World Headquarters and the gallery for a brief look at the SHO’s of the 2010 convention.
