The 100 most influential people in the world in 2014 have been listed by Time magazine on Thursday. This list is the 11th such list published by the publication that has become well-known for its rankings of people for their various impacts on society. The publication chose to categorize its 100 persons into the categories which are “titans,” “pioneers,” “artists,” “leaders,” and “icons.” While there are many persons on the list that one would expect to see listed, there are plenty of surprises as well. Most of the persons who made the list are artists, politicians and business people.

The publication included a brief write-up on each of the persons who made the list. The write-ups gave insight into each person’s contemporary influence. Of interest to readers, the comments written about each of the 100 persons was written by many well known persons. For example, President Barack Obama wrote about Pope Francis and actress Lupita Nyong’o of “12 Years a Slave” motion picture fame wrote about the iconic motion picture star and director Steve McQueen.
Beyonce was honored by being chosen to be on the 2014 Time 100 issue’s cover. She is one of 41 women who made the list this year. That sets a new record for the number of females making the list of 100 people. Crunching the numbers another way, one will count 18 business people on the list, according to the Guardian. Additionally, 27 people on the honored list represent various aspects of the arts. Of the four categories in which the honorees are listed, the people who are in the arts have the most people.
It should be remembered that the publication takes the word “influential” quite literally and seriously when choosing the persons who make the list. These 100 people are said to have had tremendous influence in the past year. It does not necessarily approve or disapprove of the influences the persons have had on society and the world-at-large.
