In the year 2013, several stars from "The X Factor" had fashion styles that stood out from the crowd. Who were the best-dressed and the worst-dressed?
Here's who is eligible to be this list and who isn't: Stars from the U.K., U.S. and Australia editions of "The X Factor" are eligible to be on this list, since Examiner.com's audience is mainly English-speaking. Also eligible to be on this list is anyone from these three shows who in 2013 was an "X Factor" contestant signed to a major label or an "X Factor" judge or host.
This list is based on what these stars wore in 2013, not just for public appearances but also how they dress in their private lives. This list isn't just based on my personal opinion but also on how fashion critics have rated these celebrities.
"Best dressed" or "worst dressed" doesn't just mean the type of clothes they wear but it also means how well-fitted and tailored the clothes are, the accessories worn with the clothes, and how well their personal grooming is to complement the clothes. A beautiful designer outfit is ruined if it's wrinkly, dirty, the wrong size, or if the person wearing it has the wrong accessories or wrong hair for it.
The 10 Worst-Dressed "X Factor" Stars of 2013
1. Redfoo ("The X Factor" Australia judge)
Redfoo (of LMFAO fame) has made it part of his image to dress in loud and garish clothing. That doesn't make his fashion style any less of an assault on the eyes. LMFAO has been considered a "joke" act that people don't take very seriously. But it's no joke if anyone has the misfortune to look at what Redfoo (whose real name is Stefan Kendal Gordy) is wearing for any lengthy period of time. There are clowns who dress better than Redfoo, whose dumb, tacky outfits make him look like a complete idiot.
2. Third D3gree ("The X Factor" Australia fourth-place contestant in 2013)
On "The X Factor" Australia in 2013, R&B/pop trio Third D3gree gave judge Redfoo some serious competition in terms of wearing the ugliest clothes. Third D3gree members Vanessa "Kelebek" Skrypczak, Jacinta Gulisano and Jordan Rodrigues dressed equally badly, so that's why the entire group is ranked on the list. Third D3gree's horrendous fashion sense seems to be inspired by the worst fashion of the 1980s. Someone should tell Third D3gree that "retro" doesn't always mean "cool," because Third D3gree's outfits would have still been embarrassing to wear back in the 1980s.
3. Misha B ("The X Factor" U.K. fourth-place contestant in 2011)
Misha B (whose real name is Misha Bryan) is in desperate need of some fashion assistance. Her clothes are often hideous, not to mention ill-fitting and unflattering to her curves. It doesn't help matters that she doesn't seem to know the meaning of "less is more," since she whatever she chooses to wear often overpowers her. Entertainers have a natural tendency to want to stand out from the crowd, but Misha B needs to learn to wear things that will make people want to look at her, not look away.
4. Paulina Rubio ("The X Factor" U.S. judge)
Paulina Rubio is another fashion disaster who thinks some things from the '80s need to make a comeback, when they don't. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to know that fingerless gloves, headbands and shoulder pads are still out of style and look ridiculous on most people today when they are as cheap-looking and tacky as the ones that Rubio wears. She also has a tendency to wear shoes that look like the type that low-rent strippers buy at discount stores. Rubio doesn't speak English very well, but there's one word that she applies to her fashion style that people who speak English or Spanish can easily understand: NO!
5. Amelia Lily ("The X Factor" U.K. third-place contestant in 2011)
In 2011 and 2012, Amelia Lily used to wear cute rocker-chick outfits that were a little bit punk and a little bit Goth. In 2013, she was trying too hard to look like a ska-pop princess, but she just came across looking like a Gwen Stefani wannabe who dresses badly. High heels with shorts or jumpers are almost never a good look. And someone needs to tell Lily that a skirt is ruined if it looks like the skirt went though a shredder.
6. Demi Lovato ("The X Factor" U.S. judge)
Something happened to Demi Lovato when she dyed her hair blue in 2013: She began to look like a cartoon character, and she began to dress like a busted-up New Wave club kid from the '80s. So that meant she began wearing eye-sores such as ugly T-shirts, unflattering tight leather trousers, and jackets with unnecessary shoulder pads. She also often wore her hair in a bun that was so messy, it looked like she just rolled out of bed. Lovato announced in December 2013 that she's quitting "The X Factor," so that's one less TV show that viewers won't have to see her train-wreck fashion choices.
7. Rebecca Ferguson ("The X Factor" U.K. second-place contestant in 2010)
Rebecca Ferguson was on our list of the 10 Best-Dressed "X Factor" stars of 2012. But she had a fashion fall from grace in 2013, as she began to wear dresses with some seriously ugly patterns in public. And the dresses she wore were often unflattering to her body shape. Even worse, Ferguson seemed to become obsessed with wearing ankle boots with dresses, even if the footwear was mismatched with the dress she was wearing.
8. Simon Cowell ("The X Factor" executive producer)
Being on a "worst-dressed" list doesn't always mean wearing loud or mismatched clothing. Being on the "worst-dressed" list can mean wearing the same type of worn-out and ill-fitting clothing every year for several years in a row. Simon Cowell says he hates to shop for clothes (and it shows), but he can afford to hire someone who could buy him clothes other than these predictable outfits: a blank T-shirt (in white, black or grey) that's too tight; a white button-down shirt that's unbottoned too low; and high-waisted blue jeans that are too long at the feet and become frayed over time. That's the same, tired look that Cowell has had (except for when he wears the occasional suit) for too many years. Cowell doesn't seem to understand that people don't want to see his man boobs and chest hair. Make it stop.
9. Leona Lewis ("The X Factor" U.K. winner in 2006)
Leona Lewis is hit and miss when it comes to fashion. In 2012, she was on our list of the 10 Best-Dressed "X Factor" Stars because of the vast improvements she made in her fashion choices. But in 2013, she's back on a lot of worst-dressed lists because the unflattering outfits she wore throughout the year. Whether it was wearing knee-length boots with the wrong dresses or her over-reliance on black hosiery or just wearing clothes that did not fit well, Lewis is in serious need of a good stylist who can help her avoid these fashion mistakes.
10. Aston Merrygold of JLS ("The X Factor" U.K. second-place contestant in 2008)
Aston Merrygold doesn't always look like a disaster. When he gets his fashion style right, he looks great. But when he gets it wrong, he gets it very, very wrong. Some of his worst fashion choices don't make him look like a pop star. They make him look like a clown who doesn't know how to use a mirror.
