One of the biggest joys of television lovers throughout the country is finding a great new show to watch. While there was an abundance of terrible new shows in 2013, the year still gave us several great shows. These are the 10 best shows that aired their first episode in 2013.
1. "Masters of Sex"
Of all of the great shows that premiered in 2013, "Masters of Sex" is easily the best of the bunch. "Masters of Sex" airs every Sunday on Showtime, and follows two sex researchers at Washington University in St. Louis. A preview trailer of "Masters of Sex" can be found here.
2. "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" had high expectations entering its first season because it is created by the people behind "Parks & Recreation," and it has been able to exceed those expectations so far. With all of the cop dramas on television, it is nice to see a comedy focused on cops.
The show may have aired exclusively on Netflix, but that does not stop it from being one of the best new shows of 2013. "Orange is the New Black" follows the exploits of a female prison, and it has the ability to make you laugh and cry in the same scene. The official trailer of the first season can be found here.
4. "Bates Motel"
"Bates Motel" premiered on A&E in March, and it quickly developed a dedicated follow. "Bates Motel" depicts the life of Norman Bates and his mother prior to the events of the film "Psycho."
5. "The Blacklist"
NBC has finally become relevant again because of James Spader and "The Blacklist." The show's plot may be formulaic, but the great acting of Spader makes every episode thoroughly entertaining.
6. "Sleepy Hollow"
This campy FOX show tells the story of Ichabod Crane in modern times. The great production value found on the show will make you think you are watching an hour long movie every Monday.
7. "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D"
After the success of "The Avengers," this may have been the most anticipated show in 2013. Joss Whedon's return to television will satisfy fans of the franchise, but it has not quite lived up to its lofty expectations.
8. "Trophy Wife"
Many people wrote off "Trophy Wife" after a poor pilot episode, but it has quickly become one of the best sitcoms on the air today. It may feature one of the worst titles in television history, but "Trophy Wife" delivers heartfelt comedy every Wednesday on ABC.
9. "The Americans"
"The Americans" ability to make you care so deeply for characters that you know are Russian spies during the Cold War is brilliant and not something most television shows can pull off.
10. "Almost Human"
The creators of "Fringe" bring another amazing science fiction show to FOX with "Almost Human." The intense action should be able to appeal to the mainstream audience much more than "Fringe."
It is easy for a new show to lose its way early in its first season, but all 10 of these shows were able to continually make great episodes throughout their run in 2013. This was certainly a great year for new television, and hopefully we will see just as many great new shows next year.
