In the year 2013, several stars from "The X Factor" had fashion styles that stood out from the crowd. Who were the best-dressed and the worst-dressed?
Here's who is eligible to be this list and who isn't: Stars from the U.K., U.S. and Australia editions of "The X Factor" are eligible to be on this list, since Examiner.com's audience is mainly English-speaking. Also eligible to be on this list is anyone from these three shows who in 2013 was an "X Factor" contestant signed to a major label or an "X Factor" judge or host.
This list is based on what these stars wore in 2013, not just for public appearances but also how they dress in their private lives. This list isn't just based on my personal opinion but also on how fashion critics have rated these celebrities.
"Best dressed" or "worst dressed" doesn't just mean the type of clothes they wear but it also means how well-fitted and tailored the clothes are, the accessories worn with the clothes, and how well their personal grooming is to complement the clothes. A beautiful designer outfit is ruined if it's wrinkly, dirty, the wrong size, or if the person wearing it has the wrong accessories or wrong hair for it.
The 10 Best-Dressed "X Factor" Stars of 2013
1. Kelly Rowland ("The X Factor" U.S. judge)
Kelly Rowland almost never missed the mark when it came to fashion in 2013. This stylish diva is so versatile that she can rock formal gowns, casual wear and everything in between, while making whatever she wears the perfect fit for her physique and personality. Rowland also takes bold fashion risks that usually work well. If "The X Factor" had a contest for fashion, then Rowland would be the most deserving winner.
2. Gary Barlow ("The X Factor" U.K. judge)
Gary Barlow is another "X Factor" judge who almost always has flawless fashion choices. Most men like to stick to wearing two or three colors, but Barlow mixes it up occasionally by wearing colors such as pale blue or purple. He also dresses appropriately and hasn't become a victim to trends. Barlow has announced that 2013 is his last year as a judge on "The X Factor," so with his departure from the show, "The X Factor" is losing one of its best-dressed stars.
3. Dannii Minogue ("The X Factor" Australia judge)
Dannii Minogue consistently avoids the mistake that many petite women make: wearing clothes that overpower them. While Minogue may be short in stature, she's long on having the right fashion sense. As the saying goes, she wears the clothes; the clothes don't wear her. Her choices are glamorous yet look fun to wear.
4. Zayn Malik of One Direction ("The X Factor" U.K. third-place contestant in 2010)
Zayn Malik's One Direction band mate Harry Styles may get more attention from the media and from fans, but Malik is by far the best-dressed member of One Direction because he wears the best-fitting clothes and rarely wears the same outfit twice. He's got a contemporary style that is age-appropriate with a slightly urban edge, which makes him stand out from the boy-band pack.
5. Ronan Keating ("The X Factor" Australia judge)
Ronan Keating looks equally comfortable in a tuxedo as he does in motorcycle gear. He wears clothes that stylishly complement his good looks and physique in a way that looks authentic and not like he is trying too hard to impress. His fashion choices are exemplary. Years from now, when most pop stars look back on what they wore in 2013, they will probably be embarrassed, but Keating should not have that problem at all.
6. Harry Styles of One Direction ("The X Factor" U.K. third-place contestant in 2010)
In 2012, Harry Styles dressed like a preppy schoolboy. In 2013, he dressed like a rock star. Styles' fashion evolution was only natural, considering his growing collection of tattoos. The influence of Rolling Stones' Keith Richards was obvious, as Styles began to wear more Richards-like headbands, more skinny jeans and more boots. It's a look that Richards had in the 1980s, and it's a look that Styles wears very well, although Styles should avoid wearing this type of ensemble too much or risk become a caricature.
7. Dermot O'Leary ("The X Factor" U.K. host)
Dermot O'Leary doesn't take a lot of fashion risks, but he is the perfect example of a man who has a clean-cut, well-tailored look. O'Leary can consistently be counted on to wear fashion that's appropriate and stylish without trying to "show off." His fashion sense is just like his hosting style: approachable, dependable and classic.
8. Jamie "JJ" Hamblett of Union J ("The X Factor" fourth-place contestant in 2012)
Jamie "JJ" Hamblett began dating model Caterina Lopez in 2013, and they also had their first child together in November 2013. Maybe this huge lifestyle change has had a major influence on Hamblett's fashion choices, because in the last half of 2013, he began dressing infinitely better than he did before then. Hamblett began dressing less like a boy (slightly baggy jeans and scruffy trainers, the British word for sneakers) and began dressing more like a well-put-together man (color-coordinated outfits and more fashionable blazers). It's a fashion transformation that makes him look even more like a star in a group of very good-looking young men.
9. Marvin Humes of JLS ("The X Factor" U.K. second-place contestant in 2008)
JLS may have broken up at the end of 2013, but Marvin Humes will perhaps be remembered as the consistently best-dressed member of the group. Whether he wore a formal suit or casual gear, Humes always brought his own sense of style to the outfit. He also took risks that a lot of men won't take, such as wearing plaid, and those risks almost always made him stand out in a good way.
10. Nicole Scherzinger ("The X Factor" U.K. judge)
Nicole Scherzinger has the kind of body that is a designer's dream. She wears fashion that's usually fearless and flirty. However, she loses major points for still gravitating to some of the trashier fashion choices that remind people of her Pussycat Dolls days. (For example, she wore a see-through dress with no bra at 2013 National Television Awards and a butt-cheek-exposing outfit at the 2013 Give It Up for Comic Relief event.) Despite some of these fashion mistakes, when Scherzinger gets it right, she looks like a style goddess.
