With Thanksgiving right around the corner, eating mashed potatoes is a must on the dinner menu. Unfortunately, the traditional mashed potato dish can be quite high in calories and fat. Simple swaps such as using regular milk instead of heavy cream can cut the fat significantly. You might also want to experiment with reduced-fat sour cream or cottage cheese to replace the milk. Finally, add some flavor to your potatoes with herbs and spices. Chives, basil, onion and garlic really add a kick to plain potatoes, or sprinkle some Parmesan or goat cheese on top.

Swapping the traditional russet potato for a Yukon gold or sweet potato adds variety and texture. Keep the potato skins on for some extra fiber. Here's a healthy take on the classic mashed potato dish, light coconut milk contributes a rich flavor to the dish without any added cream. This recipe is great from the slight sweetness of the sweet potatoes, making this a wonderful alternative to the traditional dish. Adding delicious sweet potatoes give a nutrient boost to regular mashed potatoes. Make sure you bookmark this one for the holidays!
