Getting kids to make healthy food choices isn’t always easy, especially when eating out. Kids are often drawn to Happy Meals loaded with fattening nuggets, burgers and fries or to hot dogs or greasy pizza.

Introducing them to ethnic specialties is a great way to get them to try something new and find healthier alternatives when having lunch or dinner out with kids.

Thai food, with lots of rice and noodles –which are favorites of kids – included in the dishes is a perfect type of cuisine to enjoy with children.

Recently, I visited Thai Zie in St. Charles for the first time. I was there with my sisters and we were impressed with the young family at the next table with two young kids dipping egg rolls and bites of chicken and scooping up rice.

Run by a mother and son team, who are natives of Bangkok, the menu includes many Thai favorites, such as Pad Thai, Chicken Curry and Fried Rice dishes. Spicy entrees are clearly marked on the menu. Portions are generous and you’ll likely have plenty to take home for a later snack or meal. A visit to a Thai restaurant may also inspire you to spend time cooking the Thai way in your own kitchen.

Hopefully, you’ll leave with an appreciation for the freshness and flavor of Thai dishes and will have found a healthy meal that your children will enjoy as much as the grown ups when you dine out.
