Texting woman walks straight into canal: 'Baywatch style' rescue

A woman who was texting her boyfriend was caught on camera as she walked straight into the icy water of a canal in Birmingham, England. Laura Safe, the 27-year-old British radio journalist who was so captivated with texting her boyfriend and didn't see where she was going, was fortunately uninjured according to a MailOnline report on Jan. 24, 2013.

“After her fall, Miss Safe tweeted: 'Oh dear. I should really be called Laura UNsafe after the day I've had! Lol’.”

The “hilarious episode” as MailOnline calls it, was called a “Baywatch style” rescue by Laura Safe, or Laura UNsafe.

When describing her rescue, Laura Safe said that Mr. Edington, who was nearby, “came running up Baywatch-style, grabbed my hand and pulled me up. He was a hero and saved my life.” Mr. Edington is the director of the company that developed the Mailbox complex that is nearby where Laura Safe fell into the icy water.

“The heroic passer-by, 34-year-old Neil Edginton, rushed to Miss Safe's aid as she flailed about in the water, watched by open-mouthed diners at the city's Mailbox complex.”

After her Baywatch rescue, Laura Safe brushed herself off hoping that nobody had seen her mishap, or misstep while texting, but as she turned around she could see that the “whole of Pizza Express at the Mailbox were there.” Laura Safe was escorted into one of the buildings, provided with dry shoes, a towel, and since the incident occurred in England, naturally a cup of tea.

Unfortunately for Laura Safe, the people at the Mailbox complex were not the only ones who witnessed Laura Safe’s texting distraction.

A CCTV footage caught Laura Safe on camera as she walked right into the water while texting. A businessman, who tried to warn Laura Safe that she was about to walk into the canal, can also be seen in the video. However, by the time Laura Safe stopped texting and took her eyes off her phone it was too late.

Laura Safe who has been reading the news on the radio station for several months does not only understand the unintended publicity that the video of her texting mishap is getting but also knows how to properly thank her hero.

Without being distracted by texting, Laura Safe “phoned her rescuer on-air “ to thank him for his heroic Baywatch rescue efforts.
