Texas Surf Co., a brand new surf boutique and coffee bar, opens its doors just in time for Galveston’s annual Mardi Gras celebration! Located at 2425 Strand, their hours of operation will be 9 am-7 pm, seven days a week. This weekend, they are staying open until midnight on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, due to the festivities. The retail side is expected to close early at around 5 pm.

Walking through the door of Texas Surf Co., an array of colorful surfboards play greeter to one’s left, fresh aromas of Surf City’s “Surfer Blend” coffee waft in the ocean breeze, and sights of smiling faces surround. Billy Blues’ surf art adorns the walls, placed strategically next to the wine rack. Customers can sip wine and take in the eye candy. A giant, pop art wall plays host to continuously streaming surf videos. One can satiate their taste buds “without the guilt” by purchasing a muffin from Sinfull Bakery. The name is quite deceptive considering that the delicious baked goods are vegan, all natural, and made of mostly organic ingredients (some even gluten-free). Texas Surf Co. has all the wonders of a surf attire shop paired with the smells and tastes of coffee, wine, beer, snacks, and then some. Originally, the plan was to rip out the bar. In a last minute decision, they left it in. Thus, the boutique bar was born.

When asked why Damien McDonald decided to open Texas Surf Co. on the strand, he uttered: “I always wanted to open a shop on the strand, still in Galveston.” But, he did not simply open up another Southern Spears Surf Shop. McDonald started a line of shirts and hats under the name, Texas Surf Co. about a year and a half ago. McDonald posited: “Everyone seemed to like it.” Out of the popularity and interest of local customers, he extended the line to a full blown label. “Simple and quirky” is how he describes the brand. As one can imagine, with all the Texas pride, the Texas surf community welcomed the label. Surprisingly, he also had global reaction. People from his hometown (Gold Coast, Australia) responded well, too. Without any negative response, Texas Surf Co. became a real possibility. While the shop is centered on the Texas Surf Co. make, other attire is sold in store as well.

Everything from locally made jewelry to major labels can be found in this shop. The shop plays home to Nixon watches, Volcom and Vans shoes, a few surfboards, some swimwear, and a kaleidoscope of selected skateboards. While Texas Surf Co. features some beachwear, it contains a larger inventory of everyday surf attire. At the strand location, they are catering to a different customer. The 61st street shop in Damien’s words is more of a “core shop,” housing more boards. The shop located near the Seawall is likely to hold more appeal for surfers ready to get in the water, while the strand shop is in the heart of Galveston’s historical shopping district, reaching a broad range of customers. For example, those visiting on the nearby cruise ships can walk on over to Texas Surf Co. to enjoy a brew while relaxing at the bar, lounge, or the additional outdoor seating. Likewise, surfers can enjoy a fresh coffee before hitting the surf or even take in a beer after a long surf session. With this mindset and lofty ceilings, this shop furnishes the island lifestyle.
