The 2011 Texas Sommelier Conference (TexSom) is coming up in August in Las Colinas.
The conference consists of several seminars over the two days concerning styles, varietals, producers, and other topics of interest to wine professionals. Seminars might be very specific, such as the wines and successes of a particular winery, or broad, such as an overview of Spanish wines.
Tasting breaks are included between seminars, so don't worry that it's like being back in school. A Grand Tasting will also be held the evening of the second day. Check out the lengthy list of wines poured at the 2010 Grand Tasting to get an idea of what to expect.
Sommeliers can compete for awards and scholarships at the Texas' Best Sommelier Competition. The competition consists of a three-part wine examination about service, blind tasting, and theory. The winner last year was Jason Huerta of Dallas' Pappas Bros. Steakhouse.
Applicants for the Texas' Best Sommelier Competition should get their applications in soon. The deadline is May 16. Apply online.
TexSom 2011 will be on August 14 and 15 at the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Irving.
