Texas school district votes to allow teachers to carry handguns

The Palestine Westwood Independent School District voted to allow teachers to carry handguns at school. A report by The Tyler Paper on February, 12, 2013, says the vote took place on Monday night. But, the school district is not simply handing out guns to the teachers. Some rules apply.

Should teachers carry handguns is a question that arose after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Conn. If the teachers had guns, would the incident have been avoided—maybe. The Palestine Westwood district seems to think that arming teachers is a good idea.

In order for a teacher to carry a gun, they must first undergo specialized training and get a concealed handgun license. In theory, all teachers should pass the required background check required by the permit. Based on this requirement it could be months before teachers start carrying. It is still up to the teacher as to whether they carry a gun or not.
