Lance Berkman and Nick Tepesch were both on the 15-day disabled list, while Michael Kirkman and Neftali Feliz were both on the 60-day disabled list. Texas also called up Cory Burns and Robinson Chirinos from Triple-A Round Rock and Jim Adduci was also brought up from Round Rock when Texas purchased his contract.
Lance Berkman was brought in this season to help replace the numbers lost when Michael Young, Mike Napoli and Josh Hamilton were lost to free agency and trades. Having only played in 68 games this season, it seemed like a bad deal, especially with Berkman hitting a low .254 with only six home runs on the season.
However, what Berkman brings to the team is veteran leadership that will help when the pennant race winds down. Texas lost that leadership with Michael Young, who was just traded away from the team Texas sent him to in the off-season. While Berkman will try to help Texas get back to the postseason, Michael Young is doing with same with the Los Angeles Dodgers now.
Michael Kirkman and Neftali Feliz return to help add depth to a pitching staff that ranks 7th in ERA and 7th in opponent batting average, but a lot 21st in quality starts. The Texas Rangers currently sit one game ahead of the Oakland Athletics for first in the AL West.
