The Examiner.com College Football Award ballots are in, the votes have been tabulated, and now it is time to announce our top players at each position. Over the past week the college football writers on Examiner.com made our picks for the top players in college football. As the regular season and conference championship games have all been played, with the exception of the annual Army-Navy game (this weekend), college football awards will be coming at you left and right. So we joined in the fun.
Our tenth individual award goes to Texas senior quarterback Colt McCoy.
McCoy won a close vote over his in-state quarterbacking counterpart from Houston, Case Keenum. McCoy received 48 votes overall, including nine first place votes. Keenum received 3 votes and eight first place votes.
McCoy has been the face of the Longhorns all season and with a target to aim for like wide receiver Jordan Shipley it is easy to see why McCoy has enjoyed so much success in his time at Texas. This season McCoy has lead Texas to an undefeated season and helped them win a spot in the BCS national championship game against Alabama.
The senior quarterback has thrown for 27 touchdowns and 3,512 yards. McCoy recorded five games with over 300 passing yards with a season high 470 passing yards coming against Central Florida. Last season McCoy showed that he can be a threat to run and score as well. While his rushing totals took a dip this season with 348 rushing yards and just three touchdowns, they seemed to come at the right moments. His 65 yard run against Texas A&M helped keep the momentum on the Longhorns sideline and broke the back of the rival Aggies.
Though McCoy is coming off his worst performance of the season in the Big XII championship game against Nebraska 184 passing yards, zero touchdowns, three interceptions), McCoy is already hauling in individual awards leading up to the championship game. Thursday night saw McCoy win the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Trophy, both awarded to the player of the year in college football. In addition McCoy was the recipient of the Davey O'Brien Award for the top quarterback in the nation. These awards were presented in Orlando Thursday night in an ESPN awards show.
