A 59-year-old, Texas man is behind bars for allegedly pummeling his dog to death with a shovel, reported Monday's Dallas Morning News.
A judge upped the bail on the alleged abuser, Robert Prichard, to $50,000; the amount was substantial enough to keep Prichard behind bars on the felony animal cruelty charge.
On August 30, Prichard allegedly beat his pit bull and then threw the dog into a pool, after the dog chewed on some patio furniture.
A witness claims that Prichard was heard yelling,
“you are dead, dog.”
The same witness advised the authorities that the dog was pulled from the pool and thrown by a fence.
Mesquite Police have stated the Prichard admitted to killing the dog - at one point, claiming that the killing was in self-defense, and at another time, explaining that the dog was killed for chewing on patio furniture pillows.
Prichard has a prior criminal history.
