Texas Game Warden helps Kaufman deputies catch copper thieves

Kemp, Texas- Copper thieves are at it again, but this time three of the thieves are behind bars thanks to an alert Texas Game Warden and Kaufman County Sheriff’s deputies. On January 7, 2012 at about 12:25 p.m., the owners of a property located in the 16000 block of County Road 4052 near Kemp were alerted by their dog that intruders were on the property. When the owner’s saw three suspects running away, they made a call to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded and found a barrel full of copper, brass and other property that the suspects were attempting to steal from the location.

According to KCSO PIO Pat Laney, “A Texas Game Warden in the nearby area spotted one of the suspects running in a field on County Road 4052 and quickly apprehended him without incident. Kaufman County Sheriff deputies, along with a Kemp Police officer were able to locate the remaining two suspects hiding in an out building at a residence located in the 15000 block of County Road 4052.”

Arrested and charged with Theft of Copper, and two counts of criminal trespass were Richard Mark Steakley, 34, of Trinidad, and Jesse Garner, 31, of Gun Barrel City. Steakley was released on a $16,000 bond, and Garner was released on an $8,500 bond. Tommy Wayne Jackson, 34, of Tool was charged with theft of copper and criminal trespass and remains in the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center with bond set at $30,000.00.
