Texas deputy killed in highway crash

MANVEL, Texas  - A Brazoria County sheriff's deputy was killed in a collision in Manvel Sunday night.
Investigators said Deputy Charles Allan Van Meter, 27, was the passenger in a patrol car westbound on state Highway 6 near F.M. 1128 about 9:15 p.m.
   The patrol car collided with a pickup truck that was turning left into a gas station and failed to yield the right-of-way to the cruiser.
   Van Meter was killed at the scene.
   The driver of the patrol car, Deputy Joshua Waldrop, 26, was hospitalized in critical condition.
   The 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck landed on its roof after the impact.
Two people in the pickup truck were injured, investigators said. The driver, Chance Chambers, 18, was hospitalized in critical condition with broken bones and head trauma. Passenger Jarvis Harris, 17, was hospitalized in critical condition with broken bones.
   The speed limit in the area of the collision is 50 mph.
