'Texas Chainsaw 3D' took the top spot at the box office in its first week, slaying "The Hobbit" and "Django Unchained" with the 25-and-under demographic. That's pretty good for a franchise which started out before those viewers were even born.
According to an article published by moviefone on Jan. 6, the latest entry in the Leatherneck saga had the biggest numbers in theaters showing the movie in its intended 3D format.
Pulling down a respectable $23 million over the weekend, TC3D proves that the horror genre is alive and kicking and old classics do spectacularly well with updates and 3D remakes.
The biggest allure seems to be the sensational performance given by Dan Yeager as the Leatherface character, a tall, brooding, menacing figure remorselessly chopping his way through the movie. Reviewer Eric Goldman at IGN writes, "when you see that giant sucker running at someone with a chainsaw, it’s pretty intense."
Perhaps it's the unique viewpoint of the story which jumps over subsequent remakes and updates, picking up the tale where the original left off in 1974.
Tobe Hooper, the genius behind that movie, tries to get it right this time, after the last 6 remakes have played to mixed reviews and box office numbers. The movie is the first in a series of six new entries for the franchise.
Looks like Leatherface will be around a long time.
