The first weekend of 2013 went to a sequel to a film more than 30 years old, and Box Office Mojo has the numbers.
“Texas Chainsaw 3D” opened strong in first with $23 million. With a low budget the film is an instant success, and the studio is already going forward with a sequel.
In second was the incredible “Django Unchained” with $20.08 million, and a domestic gross of $106.4 million.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” slid into third place with $17.5 million, and has grossed about $263.8 million.
The incredibly overrated “Les Miserables” has fallen to fourth earning another $16.1 million, and a domestic take of about $103.6 million.
“Parental Guidance” had to settle for fifth with $10.13 million, and a gross of $52.8 million. It’s good to know Billy Crystal still sells seats since his “Monsters Inc.” prequel comes out later this year.
