Texas boating season kicks off Memorial Day Weekend 2014

If your family is eager to get on the water this Memorial Day weekend, consider a few options that aren't far from Houston and that will be memorable for all involved.

For a longer road trip, take the short 3 hour drive to Lake Travis just outside of Austin. Memorial Day weekend kicks off the official boating season on the state's largest lake. Rent a pontoon boat for your family for a half day or full day trek around the lake. Pack a cooler of snacks and plenty of water and you are sure to have a memorable time tucked into a peaceful cove where swimming is the best, or in the open water where water sports are king. Make sure to book watercraft in advance to secure a prime piece of equipment for a prime time slot. Earlier in the day (10:00am - 2:00pm) is the best for tubing and water skiing as the lake's waters are usually calm. However, if you are interested in seeing massive amounts of the expensive, chic, and unique boats, consider securing a spot during the 12:00pm - 4:00pm time slot where the lake is the busiest (and hottest). For boat rentals, check out VIP Marina in Leander, Texas by Volente Beach, or Just For Fun Watercraft Rental on Emerald Marina near Lago Vista.

Those wanted to be just far enough away from the big city may consider Lake Conroe. Recent rainfall has lakefront home owners and boat enthusiasts leaping for joy due to the lake being full for the first time since spring 2010. Boat docks will be readily available should your family want to take the short 1 hour jaunt from the city. Lake Conroe Just Fun Rentals offer a large fleet ready for use. Call ahead to make last-minute reservations.

Whatever you do this Memorial Day weekend, remember to be safe, wear sunscreen while outdoors and take time to remember those that have served this country proudly and whose memory we honor this weekend.
