It is no surprise, but it is the pride of the Texas A&M women’s basketball program that Aggies’ sophomore guard, Courtney Walker, was named the SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, as noted Jan. 20, 2014 by Texas A&M University Athletics. Walker is the first Aggie player to earn the SEC Player of the Week nod this season.

Quietly, and with total focus on team play, Walker has averaged 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals this week. Her ability to score in double figures has also been extended to four consecutive games. Walker’s free throw shooting percentage makes her a “go-to” player as well for the team.

In the Aggies' home game Thursday, Jan. 16, against No. 8. South Carolina, Walker led the team in scoring with 18 points (to Courtney Williams’ 17 points and Karla Gilbert's 11), plus she had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal and played for 42 minutes. Her ability to play defense is strong as well, as the Aggies held Mississippi State to their season low 20.3% shooting from the field.

In the game against South Carolina, the Aggies led by 19 in the first half, thanks to standout play by Walker, Jones, and Gilbert. Walker’s six-foot jumper in overtime was considered the clutch play of the game as it “kept the Aggies up by two possessions with 58.8 to play,” which sealed the game over South Carolina.

In yesterday's win over Mississippi State, Walker led the Aggies' scoring again with 16 points, she was 4 of 6 on her free throws, and had 3 rebounds, playing for 31 minutes as the Aggies defeated the Lady Bulldogs, by 73-35. Courtney remains an 80% free throw shooter so far this year, one of the team's best.

The engineering major from Edmond, Oklahoma, has the ability to remain focused, whether or not her offensive game is in top form, on defense and smart play throughout. She regularly passes the ball to a more open player when she sees the opportunity, but in the past four consecutive games, Walker has been sterling in her choice of offensive buckets, and it’s great to see her honored. She's been scoring in double figures for the past four straight games, so she is in top form on both sides of the court. Courtney is characteristically modest, so she’ll just be proud that this is another honor for the Texas A&M women’s basketball program. It's all about "team" for Gary Blair's team--always.

The Aggie women are on the road to Columbia, Missouri this Thurs., Jan. 23, at 7:00 p.m. Later this week, on Sun., Jan. 26, the Aggies welcome the Tennessee Lady Volunteers at 3:00 p.m. for the very first time. Even though the game will be on ESPN2, everyone who cares about Texas A&M is encouraged to come out and support the women’s program in person. Congratulations, Courtney Walker, on being named SEC Player of the Week. We’ll see you all at Reed Arena on Sunday.
