Texans set playoffs as goal, send three to PUP

Gary Kubiak enters his fourth season as Texans head coach    (houstontexans.com)

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak met with the media yesterday and gave a status on the team as it heads into its first training camp practice this morning.

The first bit of news was that the Texans have placed three players on Active PUP.  Antwaun Molden and Travis Johnson were not surprise adds to the list but rookie TE Anthony Hill's hamstring issue was news to me.  Hopefully Hill recovers quickly because he needs the work and he's really the only true blocking tight end on the roster.

Goals set too low?

While any talk of playoffs around here would have been ridiculously absurd before last season, I have a slight issue with this 'playoffs or bust' mentality.

I think the team is setting its goals too low.  Where was the 'we want to win a championship - that's what we're here for' rally call?

So if the Texans manage to squeak into a wild card spot at 9-7 and lose in the first round, then you have achieved your goal?

At the very least, I would have loved to hear a "we want to win the division" from a player or a coach.  It's realistic - believe it or not - and implicit within that goal is making the playoffs.  I know that anything can happen in the playoffs but playing just good enough to get in the tournament isn't setting your sights high enough in my opinion.

The difference is the mindset between settling for 9-7 vs striving for 12-4.  This team is at the point where losing any game should be unacceptable vs. losing six or seven should be okay.

Fans are growing tired of 'golly gee it's hard' talk, even though we know it is.  It's time to show the rest of the AFC South that you are for real.

Training camp opens

I'll be out at camp this morning and will have a report up later tonight.

Fans are growing tired of 'golly gee it's hard' talk, even though we know it is. It's time to show the rest of the AFC South that you are for real.....Naaaaah. Fans are fans, we root for our team because its our team. The final outcome is the score at the end of the game and not he hipe in the words or lack of words from the Coach. As a fan, I am tired of the losses and the melt downs and the crapping play of the "chosen" ones. Coaches come and go, fans stay local to the image, city, deeds and logo, not the words....

    Dang AJ, you're a taskmaster !
If we have a winning record (anything from 9-7
thru 16-0) AND qualify for post-season action that's a HOME-RUN. No matter if we win the AFC South, though that would certainly be a nice bonus and an unexpected surprise.

    @Don

If the Texans somehow managed a wildcard on 9-7 and lose by 20 in the first round of the playoffs, that's not much better than 8-8 in my opinion. Definitely not a home run. Maybe a double with the runner left on base.

    AJ,

Try to put things in perspective. Of course we all want to win the playoffs, but having come up short of a winning season since day one (8-8 is not a winning season in my opinion)- It's really tough to muster up the expectation.

9-7 shows "progress". A fickle-fan may only look at the score at the end of the day, but anyone who knows anything about sports recognizes improvement-- If we score a 9-7 this season, that creates hope that next season we may just go a little further...and then further... But if we have another 8-8 or losing season... we'll be looking for another season of wondering when they'll get their heads out of their behinds.
