The Kansas City Chiefs got a good scare in the third quarter, but prevailed 17-16 to maintain their perfect 7-0 record.
The Texans failed to enter the red zone in the first quarter, and settled for a Randy Bullock 48 yard field goal for the early 3-0 lead.
Texans defense had a tough time stopping the run, especially Jamaal Charles who ran into the end zone for the 1 yard touchdown and the 7-3 lead in the first inning.
Arian Foster left the game in the first quarter with a severe hamstring injury and Brian Cushing was actually carted off the field. Cushing left a with a broken leg and a torn LCL that placed him out for the season.
Keenum launched a 29 yard pass to rookie wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins that helped the Texans regained the lead at 10-7 in the second quarter.
"He's got some things he's got to understand when they come after him. But he made some great football plays to get his team in position to win," said Texans coach Gary Kubiak on Keenum.
The Chiefs wasted no time in answering back when Alex Smith capped off a 97 yard drive, with an open 5 yard touchdown run and a 14-10 halftime lead.
The Chiefs were well on their way to 7-0 record and could surpass the 2003 team's record of 9-0 this season behind the great yet smart plays of Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles. Head Coach Andy Reid has certainly changed the culture of the Chiefs and has instilled a confidence that hasn't been seen in a long time.
"It's confidence," said linebacker Tamba Hali, who was part of the two-win team last season. "Guys believe in what we're doing. They believe in one another, and that goes a long way."
Bullock completed two field goals for the Texans, and Ryan Succop kicked in a field goal as the Chief maintained the 17-16 into the fourth quarter.
The Chiefs punted with less than two minutes left and the Texans could not capitalize on the opportunity to win the game with no timeouts left. After an incompletion, Keenum was stripped of the ball by Hali on the next play which sealed the victory for the Chiefs.
Case Keenum passed for 271 yards and one touchdown in the loss. The Texans have lost five straight games.
Alex Smith finished with 240 yards, one interception and one rushing touchdown in the victory. Jamaal Charles rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
It was a physical game," Charles said, "the kind of a game this team needs to go far."
