Texans announce signing of A&M's Brantly

Brantly

The Texans formally announced their undrafted rookie free agent signings today.

We discussed all but one of these signings and the release of tight end Courtney Anderson in previous entries.

Not previously reported was the signing of Texas A&M punter Justin Brantly.

Brantly is more than just a 'camp leg.'

He's a good athlete who was a two-time all-state selection at punter for Sealy H.S. and also played quarterback and tight end.  He averaged over 45 yards per punt during his senior year at A&M, which was good for #3 in the country and All-Big 12 honors.

Brantly could give Matt Turk a good run for his money this summer.

Turk ranked 26th in the NFL last season with a 42.3 yard average (35.2 yard net, ranking 29th in the league).  His 17 punts inside the 20 ranked 23rd in the league.  Turk is 39 years old and in the final year of his contract.

And if you were confused by the Shane Lechler babysitter comment in Nick Scurfield's article above, read this article by Charean Williams and it will make more sense.

If Brantly can kick anywhere close to the level of his mentor/babysitter, the Texans could be in good shape at punter for years to come.
