Test yourself: Are you a lazy thinker?

A ball and bat both together cost $1.10. If the bat cost $1.00 more than the ball, how much does the ball cost?

If your answer is 10 cents, you're wrong, according to a study published in Springer on Feb. 19. The ball cost 5 cents.

You may be intellectually lazy.

The new study published in Pyschonomic Bulletin & Review by Wim De Neys and colleagues from the National Center For Scientific Research (CNRS) in France showed that many individuals would take the easier route when processing information. They dubbed the lazy thinkers with the moniker “cognitive misers.”

While it may appear people subconsciously take the easier way to answer questions, psychologists believe they are fully aware they are doing it.

Most individuals know they are lessening the cognitive (thinking) effort so it's not necessarily an intellectual deficit, but an intellectual laziness.

Are you a productive, creative or critical thinker?

Chances are if you dismiss the 'ball and bat' question without trying to figure it out, then you could be a lazy thinker.

(The author got the answer wrong, too)
